Studying abroad can be one of the most rewarding events in a person's life. Despite this, students should plan ahead to get the most out of the experience.

Going abroad for a year or even a semester can seem daunting, especially for those who have never traveled outside the country before. In order to prevent some common mishaps, students should do the following before going off on their adventure:

Research Your Airline

Different airlines have different rules regarding baggage policies. Most will only allow two suitcases that are 50 pounds or less, but it varies airline to airline. Often additional luggage is allowed, but fees may be expensive. In addition, when packing, keep in mind that you will have to lug these bags throughout a strange city until you reach your final destination.

Find Out as Much about the Country as Possible

Knowing simple facts about the country you are studying abroad in, such as who the current leader is and the common laws of the country, will prevent many problems from arising. In addition, researching the general history can help to explain a lot about a country and will also prevent you from seeming like a "dumb American." Furthermore, find out the basic customs practiced there to prevent offending anyone accidentally.

Figure Out the "Ins and Outs" of the Transportation System

Knowing how to get around the city you are about to spend the next three months or more in is essential. Besides figuring out the general gist of the transportation system, remember to research the times of the first and last bus and subway to prevent being stuck somewhere in the middle of the night.

Remember that different cities have different rules when it comes to their transportation systems. For instance, Washington, D.C. does not allow any food or beverages on their subway systems, while London does not enforce any such rule.

Know What is Included in Your Accommodation

Chances are you will know where you are going to be living while abroad, but make sure to know the exact details of your new home away from home. For instance, will you be provided towels, sheets, and pillows? Will you be sharing a bathroom or have a private bathroom? Is there a kitchen in your apartment or dorm and what does it include?

These questions will let you prepare properly for what items to bring with you. Regardless, many of these items can be purchased while abroad.

Inform Others of Your Travel Plans

When you found out you were traveling abroad, you most likely told your friends and family. But don't forget to inform those who also matter, such as your bank and your cell phone company.

Let your bank know where you are going and for how long so that they will not assume your card has been stolen while abroad. Also, let your cell phone provider know about your plans, and change your cell phone plan accordingly.

Finding out the details of your life abroad and mapping out your trip accordingly will prevent any number of problems from occurring. In short, think ahead and plan in advance.
