Moving abroad for a while to work or study? Time to start researching! Here are a few things to learn about a country before even setting foot on the airplane.

Before going abroad, it's important to be educated about certain subjects concerning the destination country. Visa rules and regulations, travel safety, finances, and general information about what to bring are all important to learn before leaving.

Legal Information to Learn Before Departure

Immigration rules and visa regulations are absolutely essential pieces of information with which travelers should familiarize themselves. A few questions to learn the answers to:

  • Does the destination country allow citizens of the home country to enter without a visa?
  • How long are visitors allowed to remain in the country without a visa? (For travelers from many English-speaking countries, it's possible to enter any country in the European Union, and several others, for ninety days without a visa.)
  • What sort of residence permit or visa is required prior to entering the country/after ninety days of living in the country?

Keep Travel Safety in Mind Before Leaving

While knowing the latest visa regulations is important, so is keeping up with current events. Pay attention to travel advisories, and stay tuned to what's going on in the destination country and city. Even if it is a country and/or city that does not normally see any trouble, it's at least good to know what's going on. If there's severe trouble in the city that is the first stop on the trip, consider changing the flight. If it's unavoidable, contact an embassy for more information on what to do.

Know Where the Embassies and Consulates are Located

And speaking of embassies, get the addresses of embassies and consulates located in the destination country. In the event of a lost passport or other emergency, this information will be critical.

Financial Matters to Consider

What is the current exchange rate? The amount of money in a bank account may seem high in the home country's currency, but could drop dramatically when converted. (A few examples: 3000 USD is only about 2100 Euro, and 3000 Canadian dollars is just under 1600 GBP.)

Necessary Information to Have Handy Upon Arrival

What is the destination address? Most countries require that visitors enter the address they will be traveling to on a form prior to crossing through Customs. The airline provides the proper immigration forms during the flight; be sure to have an address (even if it is just that of a hostel, hotel, or a university) handy.

Additional Useful Knowledge About What to Bring

Even simpler matters, like the types of electrical outlets in the destination country, are good to know. Why? To use the electrical outlet example, that's important for buying the proper electrical adapter before departure. This will enable use of a laptop computer and a cell phone charger abroad, along with other items from home.

Being prepared for a move abroad involves acquiring vital knowledge about the destination country. It's also important to have specific information readily available that may be needed prior to or upon arrival. All of this will make the transition to life abroad easier, and save travelers from surprises down the road during an extended stay in another country.
