Culture, Nightlife & Two Unis Attract Students from Around the World

The East Midlands city is an ideal location for foreign exchange students to explore British culture, travel Europe and gain an international perspective.

As the trend of college study abroad continues to explode, Nottingham, England has become a top location for students from around the world. It houses two of the top-ranked universities, hundreds of social establishments and is in a prime location for cheap European travel.

The University of Nottingham has more than 7,000 international students enrolled from over 140 countries creating a diverse campus environment. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses across disciplines in art, engineering, business, law, health/medicine and the sciences; and was ranked the Times Higher Education UK University of the Year for 2006/07.

University Park campus houses state of the art facilities yet the residential section is surrounded by acres of gardens and green land granting it a Green Flag Award. The student union produces on of the largest Freshers Fayre Events in the country with over 300 sports, societies, businesses and volunteer programs to join; in addition to the campus pub, you will find it difficult to get bored.

Nottingham Trent University offers a broad spectrum of courses, including fashion, media, business, architecture, and teacher training, attracting a diverse range of students. There are three different campus locations – Clifton, just outside the city, Brackenhurst, in the countryside, and City, in Nottingham’s stylish centre. NTU’s reputation includes consistently high employment rates for new graduates, competitive work placements with top companies, and hands-on coursework.

While all campuses offer student accommodation, the city campus gives you the option of living in the urban bustle of Nottingham. The campus is located just minutes away from the Old Market Square, The Royal Centre Concert Hall, Victoria Shopping Centre and Arboretum Park.

Ideal Location

Situated in the middle of the country, travel is convenient with trains and bus services available to explore the UK. London is only about three hours away and just north of the city the Peak District provides an arena for outdoor pursuits. Weekend trips to Wales, Scotland and Southern England are easy to plan and affordable on a budget.

The East Midlands Airport is located just 14 miles outside the city offering daily flights to numerous destinations throughout Europe, and some as far as Africa, and the Caribbean. With over 50 airlines, many with budget fares, you can easily spend a weekend on the Mediterranean and return in time for a Monday morning lecture. The airport is easily accessible to and from the city by the Skylink bus 24 hours, daily.

Endless Entertainment & Culture

Over 300 restaurants and bars inhabit the city centre offering a wide-range of culinary delights. The quality and diversity offered, as well as having its own Michelin-starred restaurant named 2006/07 AA Restaurant of the Year, has made the city a national treasure for dining. Every where you turn is another pub including the Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, claimed to be the oldest pub in England, and the local Pitcher & Piano, located in an old church building. Both universities sponsor various social events and nights out at the bars and clubs in the centre providing you with a convenient, safe introduction to the never-ending nightlife.

The Royal Centre Concert Hall and Lakeside Arts Centre, located on Nottingham University campus, show regular dance, theatre and comedy performances, while Rock City and the Arena host popular music shows. If you love watching sports, Nottingham has two local football (soccer) teams, a cricket team and ice hockey. Not to mention, it is rated second to London for its prestigious shopping.

Just outside the city stands the landmark that made it famous – Sherwood Forest where Robin Hood ‘stole from the rich and gave to the poor.’ The city’s culture includes many tales of the merry men as well as the Nottingham Castle, with beautiful greens and views.

Whatever your interests, Nottingham has something to intrigue you. The cultural perspective you will gain from your time abroad is life-altering so make the most of every opportunity.
