For the native speaker of English who wants to study abroad, but isn't interested in or comfortable with speaking another language, there are plenty of cities out there!

Study abroad is not just for foreign language majors! For students from an English-speaking country who want the amazing experience of living in another country but aren't comfortable dealing with another language, one of the following English-speaking cities, depending on the country of origin, may be just the right fit.

San Francisco Bay Area, California, USA

Stamford and the University of California-Berkeley, among the most prestigious schools in the United States, are both in this area. San Francisco is arguably one of the coolest cities in the U.S., so spending a semester or year here can be a wonderful experience. Other great study abroad destinations on the west coast of the U.S. (or in the Pacific) include Los Angeles, Seattle, and, of course, Hawaii.

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

This vibrant city of about 580,000 residents on the Pacific coast is home to the University of British Columbia, among others, and from this university alone the undergraduate student population is over 36,000. Another great study abroad destinations in Canada is Toronto (home of the University of Toronto). And, though it is in French-speaking Quebec, Montreal is home to the internationally renowned McGill University.

London, England

This beautiful, bustling city is a fantastic place to study abroad. From King's College London to the London School of Economics to the University College London, among over 20 others, London is the place to be. There are also a variety of specialty schools in London. Oxford and Cambridge are, though situated well outside the city limits, still within reasonable distance.

Sydney, Australia

Located on Australia's east coast, Sydney, population 4.4 million, is home to schools like the University of Sydney, the University of New South Wales, and Macquarie University. The University of Sydney alone has about 23,000 students and is ranked among the top 100 universities in the world, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh is a beautiful city of 450,000, and is home to the lovely, towering, and aptly named Edinburgh Castle. Over 24,000 students study at the University of Edinburgh, one of the oldest universities in the UK. Other options for students in Scotland include the University of St. Andrews and the University of Glasgow.

New York City, USA

Looking for one of the most exciting cities, if not the most exciting city, in the world? Think of going to New York! With tons of colleges to choose from (more than 20 in Manhattan alone, over 100 in all five boroughs), there are programs available for students of all academic disciplines. New York is also home to one of the top universities in the world, Columbia University (ARWU #7). For those who'd prefer to study elsewhere on the east coast of the USA, Boston is a fantastic university city.

Auckland, New Zealand

Auckland is New Zealand's largest city with about 1.4 million residents, and is home to the University of Auckland and the Auckland University of Technology. Altogether, there are over 60,000 university students in this city. Another option in New Zealand is Dunedin, home to the University of Otago. And Wellington, population approximately 480,000 and student population 22,000, is home to the Victoria University of Wellington.

Dublin, Ireland

Ireland has several possibilities for students! The famous, prestigious Trinity College in Dublin, with over 15,000 students, is a wonderful study abroad destination. Other cities in Ireland to consider are Cork and Galway.

For students who want a great study abroad experience without the foreign language requirement, the San Francisco Bay area, Vancouver, London, Sydney, Edinburgh, New York, Wellington, or Dublin may end up being a great option!
