A reviews of some of the best travel and work abroad websites including Roadjunky.com, Transitionsabroad.com, and Escapeartist.com

Once upon time in the not too distant past, moving away to work abroad was like taking a blind leap in to the unknown. Today however is a different story. With all the information on the super highway, it’s not unlikely that by punching a few keywords into your favourite search engine you can quickly and easily find your way to a wealth of pertinent information, relevant forums, or the documented experiences of others. Whether you’re immigrating to Australia, moving to Korea to teach English, or want to live in an igloo in North America, everything you need to know is at your fingertips.

There are several websites that do it better than others. These are:

Roadjunky.com

The brain child of self confessed road junkies Jim Klee and Tom Thumb, Roadjunky is the ultimate alternative travel resource. With an emphasis on moving away from non-challenging consumer travel, Roadjunky puts together alternative mini guides to some of your favourite destinations, and contains a wealth of useful articles. It’s the Roadjunky work abroad section that stands out from other travel websites, where you can a find a number of step by step guides to working abroad. Guides cover everything from becoming a travel writer, to teaching English, to import/export, to busking.

Transitionsabroad.com

Transitions abroad magazine has been teaching tourists how to be travellers for some thirty years. Founded by Clay Hubbs, the magazine was one of the first tools for the independent traveller. Today it has a very useful website that covers everything concerned with moving, working, studying, and volunteering overseas. The articles are detailed first hand accounts of the experiences of others, and each article has links to other relevant web resources. The website is particularly useful for those seeking information on teaching abroad.

Escapeartist.com

In their own words escapeartist is a website that ‘shows you how to restart your life abroad. With thousands of articles, contacts, resources, links and tools for finding overseas real estate, international employment, hidden enclaves, artist havens, unique destinations, offshore investments, and the requirements for living an international lifestyle.’ It’s been running since 1995 and has a huge variety of articles, profiles and ebooks. While most of the information is free, the more detailed ebooks require the user to pay a fee before downloading.

suite101.com

Last but by no means least, one of the most varied and useful websites for finding information of any kind is the highly versatile suite101. Containing detailed information, articles and blogs on just about any subject you can think of.
