Funding for Academic Opportunities in Germany

German Grants, Fellowships, & Scholarships for Study & Research

Mar 6, 2009 Suzanne Swartz

Hope to build research credentials and experience? Many organizations provide opportunities for undergraduates, graduate students, Ph.D candidates and post doctorates.

Home to some of the oldest universities in the world, Germany has long been a center for academic research and study. There are a number of prestigious research fellowships, scholarships, and grants for studying or conducting research in Germany.

Funding Through the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD)

The Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (German Academic Exchange Service), offers grants for U.S. and Canadian students and faculty in various stages of their academic careers: undergraduates, graduate students, doctoral candidates, as well as post doctorates and university faculty members. DAAD grants and scholarships are for research, study, or internship opportunities that complement academics. The DAAD offices are based in New York City and are located at United Nations Plaza.

In addition to general study grants, there are a couple of special programs that DAAD offers that are worth highlighting:

  • Bundestag Internships and Fellowships: One of DAAD's programs is the Bundestag Internship, which is geared toward undergraduate and graduate university students. Participants spend two months interning in the German Parliament (the Bundestag). Open to students from the U.S. and Canada.
  • internXchange: For U.S. communications/journalism students only, this program offers the opportunity to intern in Berlin with the German media over the summer.

Funding Through the Institute of International Education (IIE) and the Fulbright Commission

The IIE offers several opportunities around the world. Fulbright grants are available for recent college graduates. An interested college senior must put together a project proposal and submit it to the Fulbright Commission after being nominated by his or her university.

The Fulbright Scholar Program is a post-doctoral opportunity administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES). CIES also offers other opportunities for faculty and Ph.D candidates. Official guidelines for all programs are listed on the IIE website.

Other Research and Study Opportunities

Other organizations worth researching for opportunities in Germany include the German Marshall Fund, the Atlantik-Bruecke, the Goethe-Institut, and the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation. The Humboldt-Foundation is geared toward those who are pursuing or have completed a Ph.D.

Individual universities sometimes have grants or awards for exceptional students planning to participate in a study abroad program, be it an undergraduate or graduate program. The German department at the university, or the academic department in which a student is pursuing a degree, should be contacted for further information.

For anyone looking to really boost German language proficiency, build up research credentials and a resume, and have a fantastic year-plus in a country known for its universities, a prestigious German research or study grant may be a great opportunity to consider.

If you are looking for more information on study abroad programs in Germany or funding and scholarship opportunities, check out www.gullivergo.com . I work for this website, which is dedicated to helping students go abroad. Search programs approved by your home institution or expand to other, outside providers. All programs contain information on academics, tuition, housing, and funding. In addition, GulliverGo helps students plan their trip and puts them in contact with students who are presently overseas or recent returnees. It's a great research tool for undergraduate and graduate students alike. Good Luck!
